"All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone." ~Blaise Pascal
I could study this one quote for a whole lifetime. It made me ponder my own meditation journey, and the clarity it has brought me. Clarity that I didn't even know was possible for me. Like a snow globe that has been set down on a counter top. All the clouded mist and snow has softly settled. The feeling that your mind is pure and free. That's what meditation has been like for me.
Many have acquired much knowledge in the field of Science. While others have gained wisdom in the field of Silence. Can you think of that last time you were alone? Picture and see yourself in a room with no one else around you. We are forced to be with ourselves everyday. Everywhere we go, there we are. Yet when was the last time you truly found yourself alone?
Being alone with your own thoughts, dreams, and visions can be daunting for some. Many people find it nerve racking, or even frightening to be by themselves. When you have found yourself alone, did anything come to visit you? Was there any amount of wisdom you gained with yourself?
I may be biased, but I feel lucky to have been alone for most of my life. I was raised by a single mother with a full time job in the military. Her being constantly "on-call" meant that I would be left by myself most days. As I look around at those who dread loneliness, I am blessed to know I conquered that feeling early.
The friend within
"Be alone, that is the secret of invention; be alone, that is when ideas are born." ~Nikola Tesla
There are those that say, with isolation comes inspiration. Despite opinions often opposed to this idea, I myself have found this to be true. My isolation has given me great inspiration. Even though I enjoy being around others, I also love being by myself. I like to treat myself. I go to the movies by myself. I go skating by myself. Life can be fun when you find and love the friend within.
I found out how to draw security from my solitude. It's been my privilege to take solace in the silence. For in the wonderful field of Science, much knowledge can be had. But I firmly believe that you can draw wisdom studying in the field of silence.
Which field will you study in your life? You may study both, for there are no rules. We're all human beings making it up as we go. We're here for a moment and gone in the next moment. It is what we do from moment to moment that makes a life worthwhile. It is what we do in each minute that makes a life well-lived.
A new practice
"As I get older I'm more and more comfortable being alone." ~Sienna Miller
If you have felt lonely, know that this is rather common. There are many who may empathize with you. But know that you can be alone without feeling lonely. You can use solitude to find your inner truth. These thoughts and revelations often come in quiet moments. Meditation can bring answers before you even ask questions. It can illuminate a darker side of you. If you live in a fast paced world, it can be like a bullet train. Hard to keep track of what's going on in your surroundings. Life seems to whiz by at a dizzying rate. We end up wondering how we got to where we are.
Spend some time alone, and really get to know yourself. After a while, your silence starts to bring you peace. It can take time to adjust to a new level of you. The beauty of this is that you have all the time you need. After all, they call it a practice for a reason. Next time you're alone, go deep, and see what bubbles to the surface. You may find, with time, you become a new favorite field of study.
