The modern way of living has prompted and created a gym-thriving business. Many people hit the gym to maintain a healthy life. However, due to the warm and moist environment, microscopic organisms, pathogens, and bacteria can thrive, and hence, your health may actually be at risk. Many people come to the gym and do not wash their hands before using the equipment. This brings potential disease into the gym. Many people also do not wash their hands after using gym equipment and bring disease home with them. Recently, studies have shown an uptrend in skin infection cases among people who have shared gym equipment. Gym infection stories have been on the rise, and people are openly sharing their stories. With that in mind, it is important to educate yourself on the potential risks of using gym equipment so that you can protect yourself and others against disease and infection.
Most people do not pay keen attention to pores and skin infections. The symptoms mostly seem to be minor and less irritating, thus needing little care. Gym infections range from ringworm to extensive rashes. Diseases such as ringworm can be easily spread through the use of shared soaps or towels. Other infections such as athlete’s foot can be acquired by simply standing barefoot on an infected gym mat. Actions such as people wiping their noses, sweating, and touching the gym equipment can quickly spread the viruses. The most common (and harmful) bacteria acquired through the gym is Staphylococcus. These bacteria can infect an open wound, scrape, or a pimple. Such bacteria can cause adverse effects on the body and can spread to the vital areas of one’s body if not well addressed.
Before you panic, remember that there are common skin issues that aren’t a sign of a gym infection. Take, for example, milia. Milia can be white or yellow, and are hard, raised bumps on the skin. They are incredibly common and are simply the result of dead skin cells not being exfoliated properly. Luckily, removing milia at home is simple and won’t require any meds. If you work out a lot, you may develop acne on your face, back, scalp, and even chest. This is nothing to worry about; it is simply the result of sweat and oil getting trapped in your pores. You can prevent this by showering soon after leaving the gym.
Gym germs should not deter you from seeking a healthy life. The benefits of hitting the gym outweigh the danger posed by infections. Routine precautions are the best way to reap all of the benefits of the gym without contracting an infection. These precautions include regulating person-to-person contact, wiping down equipment before and after use, wearing shoes at all times (even in the locker room), washing your hands, and using antibacterial sanitizer have been found to be effective in curbing the spread of these infections. If you feel you must shower in the locker room, make sure you bring shower sandals so that your skin doesn’t come in contact with the shower floor. Also, if you feel you must use a towel, bring your own rather than using the towels the gyms provide, as you can’t be sure how sanitary they are.
If you have contracted infections, seek medical attention immediately. Also, don’t forget to notify the gym so that they can take measures to sterilize the equipment. If you are sick, or have a Staphylococcus, ringworm, or athlete’s foot infection, stay away from the gym. This will keep others from contracting your illness.
