If you’re like me two days ago, you’re probably thinking what on earth is a coffee enema? It seems like every day a new piece of news about the health benefits of coffee comes out, but you’ve probably never heard of a coffee enema. Or maybe you have and you’re looking for more information on it. Anyways, I thought that I was pretty hip on alternative health treatments, but this was something I’d never heard of. So what is it? What good does it do? Read on to learn what a coffee enema is and some of benefits and risks associated with the coffee enema.
What is a coffee enema?
A coffee enema is more or less exactly what it sounds like. It’s the process of injecting coffee into your body via the anus to cleanse your entire system, but primarily your rectum and large intestines. One of the founding fathers of the coffee enema was German-born American physician Max Gerson. Gerson developed Gerson Therapy, which is a dietary-based approach to cancer treatment. His therapy focused on the idea that disease is caused by a buildup of toxins in the body, which led him to develop and promote the coffee enema. While the concept of enemas has been around since the Ancient Egyptians, caffeine as an enema material was conceived back in 1917.
Coffee Enemas Can Eliminate Parasites
The parasite Candida is a type of yeast that normally lives inside our bodies in small amounts. As we consume glucose that is used to feed our yeast cells, we allow them to multiply abundantly. However, upon ingestion of different antibiotics or hormone-based birth control options, we are at risk of depleting the helpful bacteria in our gut that keep the yeast in check, leading to a troublesome battle with our parasitic internal bacteria. Free radicals are often generally associated with cancer, but in the digestive tract free radicals are responsible for inflammation and cellular damage. When the free radicals are neutralized, bile from the liver and gallbladder transports them out of the body through bowel movements. This fact is a little obvious, but I have to mention it. Mechanically, an enema relieves constipation by forcing the colon to become more active in facilitating the emptying of stool and removing residual matter such as food particles or bacterial organisms that have been caught within the gut lining that can cause blockage. The insertion of water into the colon stimulates peristalsis while also increasing bile production. Meanwhile, the actual coffee may provide beneficial in cleaning out the diverticuli in the colon that are responsible for trapping food particles and microscopic organisms. As with any enema, it’s important to pair this treatment with increased water consumption to prevent dehydration.

Coffee enemas are potentially useful in that they are powerful tools in detoxification of the physical body. But what can they contribute to your mental well-being? As your coffee enema stimulates the natural processes involved in detoxification within your body, you are ridding yourself of poisons in the blood that negatively impact your oxygen transfer, often leading to you feeling sluggish and fatigued. But There Are Some Risks
At this point in time, there are not many studies confirming the benefits of coffee enemas. One of the risks associated with coffee enemas is hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, which is especially dangerous for diabetics. Over use of this type of enema, or any type of enema, may cause decreased ability to independently control bowel function. Finally, using a coffee enema puts you at risk for tearing or ripping the tissues of your colon walls, leading to difficulty in mineral and water retention in the future.
Best Kinds of Coffee to Use With a Coffee Enema
If you’ve committed to doing a coffee enema, it’s important to choose the right kinds of coffee beans for your treatment. When choosing a bean, be sure to look for products that are organic or natural. Air-roasted coffee beans work well because they haven’t been exposed to the machinery and chemicals used in typical drum roasting methods. Air-roasted beans are also likely to be free from mold and fungus that comes from roasting through traditional methods. A medium roast is a great place for beginners to start, and they can work up to a light roast that has a higher caffeine and palmitic acid content. There is no difference in potency between whole bean and fine grind. It might go without saying, but make sure that the coffee bean you choose is caffeinated, not decaf, as the caffeine molecule is important in the enema process.
Coffee Enema Preparation
When you’re ready to get started, make sure you have:
- Filtered water
- A stainless steel pot
- Ground coffee (approximately 2tbs)
- Ice cubes
- Cheesecloth and container
- A syringe or enema bag
- A funnel
No worries if you don’t have these items around the house. Search for medical supplies retailers in your area, and don’t forget to check with herbal shops in your town. You’ll need to boil your coffee in the steel pot until the mixture is finally coffee. After you remove the pot, cool the liquid with the ice cubes to cool to room temperature and strain. Make sure to lubricate your anus with your chosen lube. If you’re uncomfortable with performing the enema by yourself at home, check out alternative treatment centers in your area.
How To Do a Coffee Enema... with a Syringe
If you chose the syringe route, you should fill it with about a cup of the coffee and insert it slowly into the rectum until you’ve reached about 4". Squeeze the syringe to release and remove slowly. It is recommended that you try to hold it for 12 minutes, at which time you release and start the entire process again.
How To Do a Coffee Enema... with an Enema Bag
Should you use an enema bag, your first step is to clamp and fill the bag using your funnel. Similarly to the syringe method, you’ll then insert the nozzle about 4" into your rectum. Remove your tubing clamp and allow one half of the liquid to enter you, hold it in for 12 minutes, release and repeat to finish the rest of the liquid. Either method you chose to deliver the enema, make sure you stay close to the toilet.
Now you’re more or less a coffee enema expert. Add this to your bank of coffee knowledge right next to the difference between a flat white and a mocha. As with all medical treatments, alternative or not, it is important you get educated on all of the risks, benefits, and preparation involved in a treatment.
